Jake Owen's dad, Steve Owen, who was diagnosed with cancer two months ago, began radiation treatments last week for which he will go five times a week for six and a half weeks at the Mayo Clinic. His father had throat surgery prior to beginning the treatments. The cancer was found on the back of his tongue and the radiation treatments will focus there and his neck area. Some of the side effects he will have as a result of the radiation treatments are a sore throat and loss of his taste buds for around a year.
Owen has an optimistic attitude regarding his dad's chances of beating the terrible disease. He recently told The Country Vibe, "I talk to him every day. I think he gets annoyed with it because he thinks that I'm over-analyzing the situation. But I'm not. I'm just careful and my main goal is to keep his spirits high. What he's going through in his mind isn't a big deal, because my dad's good at everything he's ever done and he works hard so he can beat it. But I remind him sometimes, whether he wants to hear it or not, 'Dad, what you're going through is not easy. But I'm here for you, mom's there for you'."
Jake also convinced his dad to get a small dog to be his companion during treatment, which is sure to help him cope as he deals with the daily struggles involved with the treatment he is undergoing.
Owen is a longtime supporter of cancer related charities, raising $125,000 for his foundation with a concert held in Vero Beach late last year. The event, a sold-out show at the city's Vero Beach Sports Village, raised money for the Jake Owen Foundation, which supports St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and youth organizations in Indian River County, Florida, including Autism Speaks and the Mardy Fish Foundation. Over 6,200 fans attended the show.
